What To Do . . .

what's a girl to do
this gorgeous fern is
sitting on the front steps of the house
and has almost grown out of the pot
we had to move it from the top step to the lower step
because we couldn't get in the front door
it spreads a good five to six feet
once the frost hits it
it will be done, finished
i would love to winter it inside
but there just is not enough room

what to do
suggestions
?

ugh! it's gorgeous!

instead of letting it die, can you donate it to a hospital, facility, group home, some place with a large foyer it could take up residence?

It sure is gorgeous Lynne. But I haven't any ideas for you. I like TexWis Girl's idea though. It's a shame to toss it. Do you have a basement with bright light where it could reside for the winter?

I like the first idea - or how about in the garage or basement? Or what about fostering it out to a friend with some extra space?

Dear Lynne,
What a wonderful specimen of a fern ..... it must love it's position on your front steps. It looks so healthy too. I adore ferns and hostas and our garden is full of them. Presumably it's an indoor fern and can't over winter outside ?!! I don't have any suggestions apart from giving it to someone with a very big house or conservatory !!!! XXXX

What a beauty. I have similar problems with some of my plants. where I live we get severe frost, and I learnt from the old men in our French village. they cut then back to almost nothing then cover them with the cut fern leaves & put them somewhere frost free, a garage, shed or cellar. Only giving them a little water eg. if & when you remember! try it. But first take it out of the pot & cut it in half keeping one that's the right size to keep indoors then if it doesn't work, you will still have one left indoors.

What a beauty, it would be a shame to let it die. Tex, does have a great idea. My hubby brings in our BIG hibiscus plant into our basement the last couple of years. Wishing you a happy day!

I used to know ferns like this, uncontrollable and wildly beautiful but that was in my other life, on the coast of BC Canada, here we haven't been successful with indoor or outdoor ferns, I envy you yours!!!

Gorgeous! Lots of good ideas for fostering it or giving it away.

I throw 2 of those away every year..Too dirty to move inside and my ex neighbor has taken enough of them..

Can you split it into smaller containers and maybe give some away?

You could sell on Craig's list. Or you could donate to a Nursing Home, School, or Hospital. It is beautiful. I think I might try splitting it, too. You must have the perfect spot!

Find a friend who has room, it's sure a shame to lose that beauty. You might divide it into smaller sections and share with your friends.

I just saw TexWisGirl's idea...perfect!
