Out With The Crates . . .

Do you ever have times
 when you put things together
 thinking they will work
and they just don't?

You look at them and think,
this may work for someone else,
 but not for me.

I put some pumpkins, crates, baskets, corn flower and mums
 together at the front door.
I kept looking at them thinking,
just not right . . .

I liked the little wall basket with the
hydrangeas, pine cones and cattails
but not the front door stuff.

I finally decided what it was.
I am not a mum person.
Never have been.

I decided to try them this year
because my mom always had mums in the fall.
Yellow . . . lots of yellow mums . . .
I like the memory, not the reality.
It isn't me . . . mums don't call my name  . . . at all.

Yesterday I opened the front door
grabbed the crates and baskets
and hauled them away.

I moved the mums out away from the front and
kept the mixture of large pumpkins
at the front of the house with the fern..

The cute grey/white pumpkin was spoiling,
thank goodness I could toss it out
in the trash this morning.

The fern came back to its favorite corner.
I decided it needed to remain
whether the frost robs it or not
.
It looks like me, it looks like us.

The mums found a home amongst the pachysandra..
They seemed to nestle right in
and called this place their home..

and the pumpkins enjoy peeking through the fern fronds.
all is well, autumn is showing its true colors this week.
The rain makes the coloring leaves look brilliant.
Wet, glossy and vibrant.

beautiful season it is.

HI Lynn I agree wholeheartedly with you. I didn't like the first shot. Too many different things in the arrangement and no point of dominance. The Mums look good nestling in the greenery and the Pumpkin just peeking from under the fern is fabulous.

Here in France Mums are used 'en mass' in the towns, making beautiful trailing, hanging displays in all there autumnal colour. As they are used for 'all saints' day on the graves of their loved ones, they're never offered as a gift or used as a welcome display on their door step.
Your porch looks so much nicer with the pumpkin arrangement, nice & simple and the Mums show off their beautiful colours slipped in garden near the pathway.

Good Morning, Lynne! I wish I had a front porch, we only have a step. I do like the spot where you moved the mums, they look beautiful there. The pumpkins and your fern are perfect. Great arrangement. Have a happy day!

Your mums do look very happy in their new spot. Your pumpkin is gorgeous against the green of the ferns. Believe it or not, we haven't purchased a single pumpkin yet!

Hi Lynne,
It all looks so pretty, and just right for your home :)
Love the ferns and the mums are such a pretty splash of color nestled in among all the greenery.

Warm wishes....
Kerin

My mum always quoted the words 'to thine own self be true' and I think this applies to many things - even to mums on the porch. I really 'get' what you mean about not being comfortable with the front door arrangement because it wasn't 'you'. I'm glad you were able to make it yours again!

The mums in the garden look great as does the simple beauty of the fern and pumpkin.

no more mums for you! (although they look really pretty in the greenery). :)

Hi Lynne, I actually put my fern at the curb, but when no one took it, I grabbed it before the garbage truck came. I rather have it die gracefully than get tossed out! Silly, right? We all have our own style, and only you know what looks right for you. You can't go wrong with pumpkins! Love, Penny

I love the mums in the pachysandra! They look perfect there surrounded by green. And the pumpkins look great too. We had a heavy rain last night - the first in 12 days - and today is sunny and bright again.

I'm liking the new spot you put the mums in they look like they belong there. I've had the same front door problem. One of these things just doesn't belong.... I cut tall ornamental grass, pomp-ass grass and have pumpkins in front. I'm thinking I have too tall with too wide

I buy mums every year. Don't know why since I'm not overly fond of them.... guess I need to try something new this year perhaps. Maybe find something else I prefer.

Your mums do look great out near the sidewalk all nestled in amongst the greens.. xox

Oh, I like the Mums with the Pachysandra! It's funny, I wasn't much of a Mum person either--until last fall when my Mums were so interesting--they kind mutated or something, and they looked wowy! But they didn't come back the same way this year--I think it was the drought. So, that area of the garden is being redesigned. Your combinations are perfect! Thanks for the ideas!

I love your thought process through this. I am not much of a mum person either. I do like pumpkins and gourds though.
