We had some excitement Tuesday morning.
I was outside cutting some pine boughs and I noticed a cardinal under the bird feeders.
We get many cardinals and other birds so it wasn't unusual to see one there
on the ground, until I noticed something was wrong.
As he moved, it looked like one of his wings was broken.
(I will call him male, not sure if male or female)
I talked to him just like he was a human.
He moved under a hemlock tree and I ran inside for hubs.
We looked for a box, instead Jack brought up a cooler we had. I
Perfect because the top was attached and we could leave one end opened a tiny bit.
So out we went . . . It took a bit to get him, but we did.
Jack took him to Brave Heart Raptor not far from us but they did not rescue song birds,
only larger birds, eagles and such.
They gave Jack a name of someone about a hour away who rescued and the phone number.
So I phoned her and Jack took off with Mr/Mrs Cardinal.
What a guy . . . he never hesitates to help people, animals and in this case, a bird!
I can't help wondering tonight if he will survive.

I heard back from the rescue and he
seems to be doing fine
they are working on her wing
we are hoping he continues to improve so
we can bring him back to our yard, wood area
~
such a helpless feeling to see this little bird with a
broken wing

Jack is a prince and you are a dear. So compassionate the two of you are. Cardinals are gorgeous birds, and your photo is amazing. The bright pop of red in the white is classic. I miss cardinals so much. When I lived in Columbus, OH they congregated in my yard. We don't have cardinals here in the west. :( Thank you for sharing your photo. I hope the wing heals quickly and he can be back in your yard, soon. xo

Oh Lynne, this is so beautiful. I truly hope he continues to improve. Bravo for you to taking the time to travel the hour to the songbird rescue. Not everyone would do that. You are bird heroes to me!
Being that bright of a red, it is most likely a male. The females are pretty, but much more subdued. So nice that you and Jack took care of the cardinal. We have them EVERYWHERE all year long. Very skittish birds, and quite vocal too. They are our state bird. :)
Aw. I'm glad that you and Jack rescued the bird and hopefully the wing will heal so it can be released into the wild again. It is sad to see injured birds or other animals trying to survive. Have a lovely weekend.
