Tried And True . . .

Favorite Cook Books and Recipes

One of my first goals in retirement
was to organize my recipes.
Appetizers, Main Meals, Breads, Soups, Vegetables, book one
Cookies, Bars, Pies, Desserts, Misc., book two
Before then, I had recipes in boxes and piles, here and there.
Retired in 2000, accomplished the books shortly after.
Perfect . . . love it!

These two books hold many of my
 families favorite recipes.

Not pretty to look at with all the drips and stains
but no doubt about it, they are tried and true.

A few of my favorites are tucked in there too.

A cook book my mom helped compile many years ago.

When mom made
Cornish Pasty
it was the very best and my all time favorite.
 Her recipe is below.
Mom always shredded/grated the vegetables
and added them to the meat.
She made her own pie crust and made the pasty in a
glass pie plate, like a meat pie.

I have made it a few times but mine is nothing like my moms!

I am sure many of you have seen and probably used this cook book.
This one has a copyright of 1953, a First Edition.
It was a shower gift before my marriage in 1961.
Torn and tattered but I still return to it often.

My favorite Brownie recipe.
Need a chocolate fix, this does it!
A never fail recipe, I make it without the frosting

(If you can't read I can decipher!)

Remember Corning Ware
My son Scott's favorite dessert.
I can't count how many times I have made this.

Local Fund Raiser
 to aid the hungry.
Excellent soups and salads

Paprika Recipe Manager
and last of all
my most recent recipe manager
Paprika

marvelous
so easy to use
We enjoyed the recipe below this weekend.

Not sure why this post idea emerged
but earlier this afternoon it did.

What fun it was to put together.

 Sharing good food and table
makes for good memories.

Aha!
Love how those cookbooks turned out!
My favorite part? That you kept the original hand written recipes, along with the tried and true recipes.
I think I was thinking that you organized them digitally.

I have some really old cookbooks also. Love them.

Such an interesting banana bread recipe... I've not seen one with lemon juice in. I should give it a try.

I so need to try out that "Paprika".

Loved this post!

Enjoy your evening.

love,
K.

I love to cook, and especially to try new recipes. I'm going to give the Cornish Pasties a try!
There's a surprise for you over at my blog!

Hi Lynne, I love your tried and true cookbooks. You have favorite recipes to treasure. The brownies sound yummy! I have been trying new recipes on the weekend. Trying to help my hubby eat a little healthier than eating out. Have a lovely day!

What a fun post! Your recipes have "war" stories with scars to prove it! Don't you love all the memories? I used to date all my recipes and note the source so there are so many memories with each one. It sounds like you've got much the same.

To me, the most beautiful recipe happens to be the one that is all spattered and aged. It has so much love! This was fun!

I have that same Betty Crocker Cook Book and I love the photos/illustrations. So retro.

You can always tell a good recipe by the amount of gunk it has on it!

Great post Lynne. I love old cook books. They tell a story of the owner and their favourite recipes. I especially love my mother's hand written recipe book. I don't remember her making most of the recipes in it but I guess she thought they might taste good. :)

I also got that cookbook as a wedding gift..I didn't move it ..along with some others..I don't cook anymore..BUT, I did keep a much earlier version (my grandmothers) that is chocked full of handwritten recipes..

I have a cupboard full of cookbooks, but my favorite recipes are the handwritten ones from my Mom and late Grandmother. My Betty Crocker has also seen better days. Great post!

Hi Lynne,
I am your new reader, I found you through a mutual.

I have been organizing my cook books and compiling them all into one for 3 years. I wanted to take all my favourites and make a cook book for each of the kids, lots of work.

I have some of the same books, treasures for sure.

I think a recipe that has been used the most, spattered, drippings and drops must be the best of all.
Take care,
cindy

Wow, another reason to admire you my friend. I have most of my recipes in 2 albums, but I have always wanted to make 3 copies one for each of my kids. The real mess I have to tackle is my address books...a mess and jumble of envelopes, slips of paper and business cards.
We all have our problem areas, right? Love, Penny
